The One I Love to Hate
Every soap needs a character that the viewers love to hate. The best known was JR Ewing on "Dallas," but it's one of those soap cliches that you see on every show. "Passions" has its major villain in Alistair Crane, but he's never really been that interesting. He's all-powerful and he's the root of almost everything bad that happens in Harmony, but so what? He's one-dimensional and kind of blah to watch.
But the one we really love to hate is Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald. Since the show started, Theresa has done nothing but scheme to get Ethan. Nothing. And the ends always justify the means with Theresa. Remember that she literally stabbed Gwen in the back, once. (I know that Gwen later stabbed her too, but Gwen was temporarily crazed by Theresa's actions.)
What really makes me crazy, and makes Theresa-hating fun, is that the writers often present her in a sympathetic light, as though she were just a poor girl searching for true love. I mean, what she did to Ethan in order to conceive his child really was rape. She drugged him, disguised herself, and slept with him. But the show never used the word "rape," which would have made the act look as harsh and criminal as it was.
Theresa is evil through and through, but isn't conscious of how evil she is, which makes her interesting to watch. And isn't it fun now to see her try to make a deal with Alistair, who's much more powerful than she is? She's offering to sell her body to Alistair in order to snatch Ethan from Gwen and get control of the children. I hope she gets what's coming to her. It would be so satisfying to watch the one I love to hate get hers.
